Referrals To Specialists

Check First With Your Insurance
If your insurance carrier requires a referral from our office (we as your child's primary care physician) before you seek care with a specialist, you must notify us at least three (3) business days for processing. This gives ample time for our staff to help you find a specialist that accepts your plan if you need, and for the insurance carrier to get the authorization back to us, in time for your child to keep their specialist appointment.
With some plans, insurance carriers will not permit our providers to give referrals without first evaluating the patient to determine if a specialist is needed. Due to this fact coupled with the vast array of plans we service, we must request that the patient's family first check as to the particulars for referrals as upheld by your medical insurance carrier, and then contact our staff.
You Know Your Schedule Better Than We Do
When a Cornerstone Pediatrics provider refers a patient to a specialist, the parent will spearhead the appointment-making process. Our staff may assist, by directing you to local specialists with whom we've worked with previously.
Avoid Delays
Please keep in mind, if you lose your referral, or fail to keep your specialist appointment, the process for obtaining another referral will start over again.
Therefore, assure you have your documents in order, and double-check with the specialist you have chosen, to confirm your appointment is good to go, and that they have received all the necessary correspondence for your child's visit.
You Decide
If you prefer to visit a specialist without an authorization, or choose one not in your plan, those services may be an out-of-pocket expense for your family. Please note that visits to another doctor's office, for associated services or emergency room service will not be authorized "after the fact". Our staff will not retrodate a referral. There is no exception.
